In Pursuit of the Odds, a jockey rides off course and the horse race soon devolves into a disorienting detour. Cut-outs, collage and cel animation combine on a multiplane camera to create a barrage of unexpected environments. Will they make it to the finish line?
This film was shot on my still work-in-progress multiplane camera set-up. I had installed the side-to-side mechanism onto 2/3 of the shelves, which was sufficient enough to shoot this film. The movement is operated by hand cranks and a numbered dial, inspired by the Oxberry animation stands. At this point, the shelves were being held up by clamps since the up and down mechanism had not been installed yet. Anika and I jerry-rigged light holders with cardboard, tape and hot glue.
