The Fruits of Nihilo
Following the imagined production process of a golden substance, The Fruits of Nihilo presents a hand-drawn spectacle of workers in mines, farmers, trains, ships, and factory pipelines. As the commodity continuously passes from one stage of production to another, it stands out through its under-camera technique. Its texture was achieved through backlit plasticine clay, with each frame carved out and shaped by hand. The film reimagines the overlooked labour processes that go into everyday commodities and explores how the human touch that has been lost to mechanized labour can be found again.
